Wichita State has gotten out of the gates well with a 3-0 record to kick off the 2023-24 season. The Shockers are coming off a 17-15 season and are anxious to get back to the NCAA Tournament this season after missing out in back-to-back seasons following a nine-year stretch of making the tournament. The Shockers have a new coach this season Paul Mills and several new players to fit into his system. They closed their season-opening three-game homestand with a 95-65 win over Friends. One of the team's returning players from last season, Colby Rogers, led the way with 18 points in just 24 minutes of work. Rogers drilled 6-of-12 shots including four 3-point field goals. Xavier Bell had a big night, hitting on 7-of-8 from the field and finishing with 15 points.
Mills comes to Wichita State after a year back at Baylor and one year removed from a 30-win season at Oral Roberts. He hopes to bring that sa me winning mentality to a team that has struggled for two straight seasons. The Shockers finished last season just 331st in the nation in 3-point shooting and 310th in field goal percentage overall. They also were near the bottom of the country in points allowed per game, ranking just 333rd. Mills committed to bringing in shooters from the transfer portal and promoting returning players to bigger roles that can shoot the basketball.
