A pair of Metropolitan Division teams square off on the ice as they look to pick up a win ahead of the holiday break. The New York Islanders are on the road as they travel down the east coast to take the ice against the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night. New York was edged 3-2 in overtime on the road by Washington in the second game of a back-to-back situation Wednesday night. Carolina was on the road in the Steel City Thursday night as they took on the Penguins in another divisional tilt and fell 2-1 in a shootout. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Hurricanes own a 7-2-1 advantage though the Islanders picked up a 5-4 overtime win on the road in the most recent matchup on November 30.

New York lost for the third time in four games as they were upended by the Capitals in overtime Wednesday night to close a back-to-back set. The Islanders entered Friday tied for second in the Metropolitan Division with a 15-8-9 record, six points behind the Rangers for the top spot. New York is 19th in goals per game as they average 3.06 goals per contest. The Islanders are 17th in goals against per game as they allow 3.16 goals a night. New York is 6th in power play success as they convert 25.6% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Islanders are 31st in penalty killing as they successfully get through 71.9% of their shorthanded situations this year.

Against Washington, New York was sound in their own end but couldn’t do enough offensively to come up with the victory though they did earn a point. The Islanders were outshot 14-7 in the opening period of play and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, New York was outshot 12-9 with each team scoring once, leaving the Islanders behind 2-1 at the second intermission. Hudson Fasching tied the game with his second goal of the season at 1:03 of the period off an assist from Cal Clutterbuck. They gave up the go-ahead goal later in the period. In the third period, New York held a 16-8 shot advantage and scored the lone goal of the period to knot things up and force overtime. Anders Lee scored his ninth goal of the season at 12:02, unassisted, to even things up and send the game to the extra session. In overtime, the Islanders were outshot 2-0 and gave up the winning goal to take the loss. Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves for New York, who was outshot 36-32, in the loss. Ilya Sorokin is slated to be between the pipes for this contest.
