The Furman Paladins and the Liberty Flames will square off in the fourth and final game in the opening round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Thursday. The Furman Paladins have picked up where they left off in 2022-23 with two straight wins to start the season. On Friday night, they took a 99-76 victory over another mid-major power Belmont in the friendly confines of Timmons Arena. The home win marked the 34th in 36 regular season games at Timmons against non-conference opponents. JP Pegues led the way with a game-high 23 points and nearly recorded a triple-double with nine assists to go along with nine rebounds. Garrett Hien chipped in with 13 points, all in the first half as Furman built up a 46-31 lead that they would never lose.
Furman has high expectations this season after winning 28 games last season and returning three starters to this year's squad. Last year, the Paladins were 17th in the country in points per game. They were 29th in field goal percentage overall and 170th in 3-point shooting. They didn't rely on the 3-ball as much as their opponent tonight, Liberty, but did get 35% of their points from long range. Furman, like Liberty rarely makes mistakes with the ball. They were ranked 44th in the country in turnovers per game last season.
