The West Virginia Mountaineers are on the road as they travel to take on the Texas Longhorns Saturday afternoon. West Virginia comes in off an 86-73 home loss to #22 BYU in their previous contest last Saturday, failing to cover the line as a seven-point underdog. Texas fell 70-65 at home to #14 Iowa State in their previous contest Tuesday night, losing outright as a 1.5-point favorite. In the all-time series between the teams, the Longhorns own a 17-11 advantage though the Mountaineers claimed a 76-73 win at home in the first meeting this season January 13.

West Virginia lost for the third time in four games as they were unable to keep up with #22 BYU at home last Saturday. The Mountaineers fell to 8-14 overall and stands 13th in the Big 12 with a 3-6 mark in conference play on the season. Against BYU, West Virginia was within one late in the first half before giving up a 13-1 run spanning both halves that left them down 43-30 with 17:23 to play. The Mountaineers climbed within five at 70-65 with 5:26 remaining but couldn’t push any closer than that as they took the loss. West Virginia shot 42.4% from the field, including eight of 28 from three-point range, and allowed BYU to shoot 48.5% in the game. Kerr Kriisa led the Mountaineers with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists in the loss.

The Mountaineers come into this contest averaging 68.5 points per game on the season, putting them 307th in the nation in scoring offense. West Virginia is below average on the glass as they pull down 34.9 boards a night while they hand out an average of 12.7 assists a night. The Mountaineers are giving up an average of 72.8 points per contest on the year, which puts them 218th in the country in scoring defense. Quinn Slazinski is one of four players averaging in double figures for the Mountaineers with 13.3 points plus 4.3 rebounds a night on the year. Jesse Edwards kicks in 14.8 points plus 8.3 boards a night while Kobe Johnson is a solid secondary option as well. Noah Farrakhan (9.9 points), Kerr Kriisa (11.8 points, 4.6 assists), Seth Wilson, Josiah Harris, Ofri Naveh, Patrick Suemnick, Akok Akok and Jeremiah Bembry are key components of Josh Eilert’s rotation. RaeQuan Battle (15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds) will be a factor as lon g as he maintains eligibility: his season debut came in the loss to Radford December 20. West Virginia is shooting 41.6% from the field as a team on the year. The Mountaineers are knocking down seven three-pointers a night while they hit 33% from beyond the arc this season. West Virginia has connected on 72% of their attempts at the charity stripe this season, putting them 162nd in the nation.
Akok (undisclosed) missed the game against BYU and is questionable for this contest.
