Against Tampa Bay, Washington struggled offensively and that proved to be their undoing as they ended up falling in a shootout. The Capitals held a 13-11 edge in shots on goal in the opening period of play but trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of action. In the second period, Washington held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal and tallied the lone marker of the period to even things up at the second intermission. Anthony Mantha tallied his 10th goal of the season at 2:01 off assists from Nick Jensen and Aliaksei Proteas to knot the game at one. In the third period, Washington held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal with neither team denting the twine, keeping the game even at one at the end of regulation. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the opening round of the shootout for the Capitals but Tampa Bay tallied in rounds two and four to send Washington to defeat.
