In the third period, Washington held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal with neither team denting the twine, keeping the game even at one at the end of regulation. During overtime, Washington held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal with neither team scoring, pushing things to the shootout. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the opening round of the shootout for the Capitals but Tampa Bay tallied in rounds two and four to send Washington to defeat. Charlie Lindgren made 19 saves for the Capitals, who held a 34-20 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. Darcy Kuemper likely gets the call between the pipes for this contest.
