The Pittsburgh Penguins are on the road as they make the relatively short trip to take on the New York Islanders Wednesday night. Pittsburgh was dropped 5-4 in overtime by Ottawa on the road Saturday night in their previous contest. New York held on for a 5-4 victory on the road over Carolina Saturday in their most recent contest. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Islanders own a commanding 8-2 advantage and have taken the last four matchups. That includes a 4-3 overtime win on the road in the most recent matchup on March 9, 2023.

Pittsburgh had won two straight and four of their previous five games before getting knocked off by Ottawa on the road Saturday night in their previous contest. The Penguins entered Tuesday 15-13-4, leaving them seventh in the Metropolitan Division, 13 points behind the Rangers for the top spot. They were six points behind the Flyers for the final guaranteed playoff spot and five back of Tampa Bay for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh is 26th in scoring as they average 2.84 goals per game on the season. The Penguins are above average in their own end, ranking 10th in goals against by allowing 2.78 goals a night. Pittsburgh stands 27th in the league in power play success as they convert 13.7% of their chances with the man advantage. The Penguins are tied for 9th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 82.7% of their shorthanded situations.

The Penguins got some offensive production in the game Saturday night but their goaltending proved to be a letdown as they took the overtime loss, though they at least procured a point in the game. Pittsburgh was outshot 10-7 in the opening period of play and trailed 2-1 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. After falling behind 1-0, Lars Eller tied the game with his fourth goal of the season, on the power play, at 14:31 off assists from Reilly Smith and Kris Letang. They gave up the go-ahead goal later in the period. In the second period, Pittsburgh was outshot 11-4 and outscored 2-1 to trail 4-2 at the second intermission. The Penguins gave up a goal early to trail 3-1 before Rickard Rakell got Pittsburgh back within a goal with his first goal of the season at 4:59 off assists from Sidney Crosby and Smith. Pittsburgh gave up a goal later in the period to restore their two-goal deficit. In the third period, the Penguins held a 23-4 advantage in shots on g oal and outscored the Senators 2-0 to tie the game, forcing overtime. Drew O’Connor made it a 4-3 game with his third goal of the season at 1:51 off assists from Marcus Pettersson and Letang. Later in the period, Letang evened the score with his third goal of the season at 17:34 off assists from Pettersson and Evgeni Malkin. In overtime, Pittsburgh gave up the lone shot on goal and it found the back of the net to deal the Penguins the loss. Alex Nedeljkovic made 21 saves for the Penguins, who held a 34-26 edge in shots, in the loss. Tristan Jarry is likely between the pipes here for the Penguins.
