Virginia Bill To Legalize Betting On In-State Teams Progresses

A bill to allow Virginia bettors to legally wager on in-state college teams passed through the state Senate's General Laws and Technology Committee on Wednesday. SB 124 will now move to the Senate's Finance and Appropriations Committee, where it could be discussed later this month.'

Currently, Virginia sports betting legislation prohibits bettors from wagering on teams like Virginia, Virginia Tech, James Madison, Liberty, and Old Dominion. If the bill passes, it would allow sports betting customers to wager on those teams, which have engaged football and basketball fans across the state.'

A similar legislative effort took place in 2022, and that bill passed through the Senate but failed in the House. Sen. Schuyler VanValkenburg told Sports Handle earlier this month that he's hopeful the 2024 effort will find a different end result.

The bill would not legalize college prop betting in Virginia.
