While I fully expect the Americans to advance in the tournament with a win over Colombia, the 7.5-run margin feels lofty given the relative inconsistency of the U.S. roster to this point in the tournament. The bats got going with aplomb against a 19-year-old A-ball pitcher Monday, but beyond that, the Americans haven't done as much damage offensively as one might have expected throughout pool play.
The next starter on tap to face the American lineup is 21-year-old Luis De Avila. The l eft-handed hurler struck out more than a batter per inning at High-A last season. With a little more experience under his belt, De Avila could avoid washing out completely in the first inning as Bratt did.
Acknowledging that a lefty pitcher will have a difficult time matching up with American righty sluggers like Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt, it may take only minor contributions from the Colombian lineup against U.S. starter Merrill Kelly to keep things within a touchdown in Phoenix.
