Game one of the World Series gave people a good idea of this Phillies team and the run that they've been on in the playoffs. The Phillies showed the grit, toughness and playmaking that have typified them since manager Rob Thomson took over in May. The Phillies did not get the best stuff out of Aaron Nola in game one. Nola lasted just 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits, including two home runs. After Houston scored two runs in the second and three more in the third, it looked like a game one laugher for the Astros. Instead, the Phillies battled back with three runs in the fourth followed by two runs in fifth to tie the game. Catcher J.T. Realmuto doubled home the tying runs in the fifth and the Phillies grit shone through. Thomson then turned the game over to his bullpen to keep the game tied with 4.2 innings of shutout baseball. Tied at five, Realmuto came through again in the 10th with a leadoff home run to give the Phils a 6-5 lead. Dave Robertson, the sixth Phillies pitcher used in the game, left runners on second and third in the 10th to earn the heart attack-save.

Thomson took a chance in game one going with Nola over the more dominant Zach Wheeler. The move looks golden now as the Phillies have their ace ready to go in game two with a 1-0 lead in the World Series. Wheeler is 1-1 in the playoffs but with a 1.78 ERA and just 10 hits allowed in 25.1 innings pitched. Thomson also gambled by going to his key bullpen pieces early in game one so Wheeler may be tasked to get his team deeper into the game in this one to give his team a chance.
