After recording a 10-3 record in 2022, the Oregon State Beavers have high expectations this season. During the offseason, they secured quarterback DJ Uiagalelei from the transfer portal, and he will assume control of an offense that produced a significant amount of points. His arrival brings about a shift for a program that predominantly leaned on its defense to secure victories last year.
The San Jose State Spartans opened the 2023 season with a blowout loss to the USC Trojans last week. They actually trailed only 21-14 at halftime, but were outscored 35-14 in the second half. Experienced QB Chevan Cordeiro threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

Last year, the Beavers' D was their strength, and there's very little doubt they're taking a step back this season due to the pieces they've lost. Even though they'll be worse in 2023, the unit should still be solid and a key reason for Oregon State's success this season. Yet, in this opener, we don't trust the defense at all.
Even when last year's defense was incredible, they were a totally different team on the road than at home. They gave up 32 points to the Fresno State Bulldogs, 42 to the Utah Utes, and fell 24-21 to the Washington Huskies.
The Spartans enter Week 1 with a game under their belt, a confident and experienced quarterback under center, and the ability to score lots of points. Last season, Cordeiro threw 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions, as he helped the Spartans average 27.4 points per game.
Then there's Uiagalelei. The transfer will make an immediate impact, and he'll want want to prove that right off the bat. But will he be enough to help the Beavers cover a 16.5-point road spread?
