North Carolina Lottery Addresses Mobile Wagering Progress

The North Carolina Lottery Commission met Wednesday, with a chunk of the meeting devoted to the state's preparations for its upcoming mobile sports betting launch.'

While the commission didn't offer any clarity as to when mobile sportsbooks may launch in the state – legislation requires a launch after Jan. 8, 2024, but before June 15, 2024 – the entity did discuss some of the steps it's taking to prepare for that launch. Among those steps are hiring Gaming Labs International and working toward the creation of an outsourced license application portal.

Sterl Carpenter, who was recently hired by the lottery to serve as its deputy executive director of gaming compliance and sports betting, spearheaded Wednesday's conversations about regulated sports betting.'

GLI contract update

GLI was hired by the lottery commission on Aug. 11 to help implement sports betting, and the commission approved an expansion of work Wednesday. The expanded work for GLI will include the licensing process for advance-deposit wagering as well as the rule creation and implementation for horse racing.'
