The New Mexico Lobos (19-7, 12-12-1 ATS, 6-7 MWC) ran the San José State Spartans (16-10, 17-8-0 ATS, 7-6 MWC) off the court when these teams met in January. San José State can get payback on Friday night when they welcome the Lobos to Provident Credit Union Event Center. In this matchup, the home team has won the past seven matchups, including the 77-57 whooping in New Mexico this season. This will mark the final meeting between these schools this regular season, with tipoff set for 10:30 p.m. EST.
It's been a rough month for New Mexico, as they've lost all four games they've played in February. The losses have dropped them to “Last Four In” in the latest Bracketology projections. KenPom similarly has them on the cusp of a top-68 team, ranking them 62nd. They'll have to win on the road, where they're 4-4, if they hope to get back on track in this game.
The latest loss came by 14 points at home against Wyoming, the worst team in the Mountain West Conference. Trailing the entire second half, the Lobos were outrebounded 39-32 and only shot 36.8% from the floor. Morris Udeze had a nice game at least, finishing with a 12-point, 17-rebound double-double.
New Mexico is 30th in the nation in adjusted tempo, leading to 80.6 points per game which leads the Mountain West Conference and is 23rd in the country. They only shoot 34.9% on three-pointers, eighth among MWC schools, but h it 48.6% of their shots overall. That number is the 14-highest nationwide. The Lobos also lead the Mountain West in free-throw attempts per game at 23.6.
Defensively, the Lobos surrender 72.3 points a night, the most in the Mountain West. Foes shoot 43.4% against them, which is eighth in the conference. However, three-point defense is excellent, limiting opposing teams to 31.9% from deep which is 85th nationwide and fourth in the conference. New Mexico's 4.0 blocks per game are second in the MWC, and their 7.0 steals are third.
