Ottawa downed Toronto 5-3 at home in the Battle of Ontario Saturday night in their most recent game. Columbus battled but lost for the fifth time in their last seven games as they were doubled up by Tampa Bay Saturday night. The Blue Jackets entered Monday last in the Metropolitan Division with a 16-25-10 record, leaving them 27 points behind the Rangers for the top spot. They were 20 points behind the Flyers for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division and 18 back of the Red Wings for the second wild card spot. Columbus is tied for 23rd in goals per game as they score an average of 2.90 goals per game. The Blue Jackets are 31st in goals against as they surrender an average of 3.67 goals per contest. Columbus is 25th in power play success as they have converted 15.1% of their chances with the man advantage. The Blue Jackets are 26th in the league in penalty killing by successfully working through 76.7% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Tampa Bay, Columbus started slow and their attempt to rally late fell short in the home loss. The Blue Jackets were outshot 13-9 in the opening period and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after the opening 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Columbus held a 14-11 advantage in shots on goal but was outscored 1-0 to trail 2-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Blue Jackets outshot 13-12 with both teams scoring twice, leaving them on the wrong end of the scoreboard. After giving up a goal to trail 3-0, Boone Jenner got Columbus on the board with his 14th goal of the season at 12:22 off assists from Johnny Gaudreau and Zach Werenski to make it 3-1. Jenner added his second of the night and 15th of the year, on the power play, at 15:50 off assists from Gaudreau and Marchenko to narrow the margin to 3-2. That was as close as Columbus would get as they gave up an empty net goal in the final minute. Elvis Merzlikins m ade 33 saves for the Blue Jackets, who were outshot 37-35, in the loss. He’s expected to be between the pipes for this contest as well for Columbus.
