It has not been an easy start for Central Michigan to kick off the 2022-23 season. The Chippewas finished last season at just 10-21 but endured several injuries and departures under first-year head coach Tony Barbee. Things have not gone much better to start this season but, to be fair, the team has played two Power Five conference teams in its first three games. One of those teams, the Florida State Seminoles out of the ACC, hammered the Chippewas 94-67 on Monday night in Tallahassee. The CMU defense struggled, allowing the Seminoles to drill 12 3-point field goals and to shoot 56% from the field. The Chippewas also turned the ball over 21 times on the night. Anthony Pritchard led the way with 16 points for CMU, a season-high, while adding nine rebounds and five assists. Brian Taylor also had a season-high point total with 15 points and added four rebounds.

“We fought hard the whole game,” Barbee said. “For 40 minute s we competed. Did we do everything right and were we perfect? No. Give Florida State credit, they force you into making a lot of mistakes. A lot of our mistakes were unforced.”

“You can't get back what's past. If we competed like this in the first two games, our record would be completely different. This was a valuable lesson that we learned tonight. If we play connected like we did tonight and compete, we will have a chance in every game.”

CMU hopes to get in the win column against South Florida on Wednesday night and end their early-season drought. They will have to improve on both ends of the floor, particularly offensively. The Chippewas return two starters from a team that finished near the bottom in several offensive categories last season including points per game, field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. The Chippewas also were one of the worst teams in the nation in turnovers, ranked 3 52nd in the country last season.
