Attorney Wonders Why Iowa Betting Investigation Targeted Athletes

An attorney representing former Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock filed a discovery motion Thursday in hopes of retrieving more information about how Brock was investigated for sports betting violations.

The attorney, Matthew Boles, alleges that hundreds of college students were investigated for illegal sports betting in Iowa, but only a handful of student-athletes were targeted with punishments.'

Brock is one of several former Iowa State athletes to legally challenge the investigations that led to criminal charges and suspensions for numerous Iowa and Iowa State athletes in the summer of 2023. Earlier this week, attorneys representing wrestler Paniro Johnson and football lineman Isaiah Lee accused Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agents of conducting an unlawful search of student-athletes who committed wagering violations.'
