Toronto Maple Leafs vs. N.Y. Islanders  Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-21-2023

The Toronto Maple Leafs face the New York Islanders with both teams looking to build off of great seasons. The Maple Leafs have a 42-18-9 record and with back-to-back wins have the second-best record in the Atlantic Division. The Islanders have a 36-27-8 record and with two wins in a row have leaped into the top wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Both teams look to improve in the playoff picture and the upcoming game looks to be a great one as a result.

The Maple Leafs are having a great season with their offense leading the way, scoring 3.42 goals per game including 10 goals in the last two games. Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander have combined for 93 goals and 145 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has stepped up as well. John Tavares, Michael Bunting, and Calle Järnkrok have combined for 67 goals and 81 assists while defensemen Morgan Rielly and Mark Giordano have added eight goals and 50 assists from the point to open up the offense.

The offense has been great but the defense has also stepped up, allowing only 2.68 goals per game with only six goals in the last two games. Mark Giordano and Timothy Liljegren have combined for 8.3 defensive point shares and 206 blocked shots while Justin Holl, T.J. Brodie, and Jake McCabe have combined for 7.0 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. In addition, goaltender Ilya Samsonov has been great with a .917 save percentage and a 2.35 goals-against average on 980 shots with 12.6 goals saved above average.
