The Tampa Bay Lightning are on the road as they make the trip to take on the New York Islanders Thursday night. Tampa Bay was in action on the road against the Rangers Wednesday night in the front half of a back-to-back set. The Lightning won their final game before the All-Star break as they doubled up the Devils 6-3 at home back on January 27. New York edged Toronto 3-2 on the road in their previous game Tuesday night. Tampa Bay finally got into action after the All-Star break Wednesday night as they look to maintain their push in the Atlantic Division race. The Lightning entered Wednesday third in the Atlantic Division with a 27-18-5 record, leaving them 12 points behind the Bruins for the top spot. They held a one-point edge on Toronto for the final guaranteed spot in the division. Tampa Bay went into Wednesday tied for 4th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 3.48 goals per contest. The Lightning stands 23rd in goals against by allowing 3.28 goals per game. Tampa Bay is 1st with the man advantage as they cash in on 29.9% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Lightning are 13th in penalty killing as they successfully work through 81.1% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against the Devils in their final game before the All-Star break, the Lightning got their offense in gear, skating away with a victory. Tampa Bay held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening period of play but the teams skated away scoreless after 20 minutes of play. The Lightning outshot the Devils 19-4 in the second period and outscored them 2-0 to lead by that margin at the second intermission. Nicholas Paul opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the season at 1:09 off assists from Victor Hedman and Darren Raddysh. Later in the period, Brandon Hagel made it a 2-0 game with his 15th goal of the year at 10:40 off assists from Hedman and Paul.

In the third period, Tampa Bay saw the shots even at 14 and outscored New Jersey 4-3 in a wild period to skate away with the win. After the Devils scored to make it a one-goal game, Steven Stamkos made it a 3-1 game with his 21st goal of the season at 3:49 off assists from Nick Perbix and Nikita Kucherov. New Jersey again narrowed the margin to one goal before Brayden Point tallied his 24th goal of the season, unassisted, at 13:52 to restore the two-goal margin. The Devils made it a one-goal game one more time before Hagel hit the empty net for his second goal of the game, and 16th of the season, at 18:21 off assists from Anthony Cirelli and Kucherov. Point closed the scoring with his second of the night and 25th of the year, into an empty net at 19:06 off assists from Hedman and Stamkos. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 21 saves for the Lightning, who held a 42-24 advantage in shots on goal in the win. With Vasilevskiy starting Wednesday, it is expected that Jonas Johansson will get the call between the pipes here.
