South Dakota Sportsbooks Post Monthly Loss For February

South Dakota became the first state of the 2024 calendar year to have a monthly loss for commercial sports betting as the state’s gaming commission reported bettors came out $38,406 ahead for February.

It was the third time in 30 months the betting public has come out winners versus the house in Deadwood, with the other occasions coming in April 2022 and last June. February marked the biggest loss of the three, with the previous worst coming when bettors walked away with $13,735 more than the $368,517 wagered in April 2022.

Deadwood’s seven sportsbooks took a beating on NFL wagers, while a four-figure loss paying out college football futures tickets also contributed to finishing in the red for the month. Overall handle for February was $696,017, resulting in a minus-5.5% hold.
