The fifth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs roll into the Sweet 16 having had the benefit of not having to play a team seeded in the top ten in the South Region as of yet. In the first round, the Aztecs survived a scare from 12th-seeded Charleston and then took on 13th-seeded Furman, fresh off an upset of fourth-seeded Virginia. Micah Parrrish had 16 points to lead the Aztecs to a 75-52 win over upset-minded Furman. Darrion Trammell had 13 points, Lamont Butler chipped in with 12 points while Matt Bradley, the team's leading scorer, added 10 points in the well-rounded attack. With the win, the Aztecs earned their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2004.

“You should play your best at the end of the season, and we're playing our best basketball as the end of the season,” coach Brian Dutcher said.

“Obviously we hang our hat on defense. That's the one thing that we do every game,” Dutcher adde d. “Then when we get the opportunity, we start making shots and play good offensively, then we're very good.”

The Aztecs march into the Sweet 16 with nine wins in their last 10 games and 11 in the last 13. They are averaging 69 points per game thus far in the tournament and shooting the ball at 46.5% from the field. In addition, the team is shooting 27.5% from long range. On the defensive end, San Diego State is holding the opposition to just 54.5 points per game. Teams are shooting just 32% from the floor against the Aztecs and 22% from long range. The Aztecs have a +16 rebounding margin in the tournament but have a -5 turnover margin through two games.
