The Rice Owls come into this matchup with Power-Five conference Texas with a record of just 1-1 after being taken down by Harvard at home on Friday night, 89-76. Rice trailed by as many as 18-points before rallying to take the lead. Harvard was able to regroup and closed with a 25-12 run to pick up the road win. Rice struggled offensively, shooting 42% from the field overall and 33% from 3-point range. Defensively, the Owls allowed Harvard to connect on 53% of its shots and were outrebounded by the Crimson 38-33. Mekhi Mason led the Owls with 20 points and five assists including four 3-point field goals. Anthony Selden scored 18 points and Max Fielder chipped in with 13 points.

“All the credit goes to Harvard. I thought they played a really good game from start to finish. They were just the better team. They were the better team out of the gate. They were the better team down the stretch. Their players made plays when they needed them most. In every category that matters, they outplayed us.” said Rice head coach Scott Pera after the loss.

Rice returns four starters from last year's team that finished 19-16 overall. The Owls were a high-scoring team last year, ranked 69th in points per game. They were also 80th in field goal percentage and 139th in 3-point shooting. Those skills were not on display against Harvard on Friday night. Rice struggled defensively, ranked 324th in the nation last year in points allowed per game. They were particularly both in overall field goal defense and 3-point defense, ranking in the bottom third in the country last season. Rice finished 226th in the nation in turnovers per game last year.
