Pittsburgh Penguins vs. N.Y. Rangers Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-16-2023

The Pittsburgh Penguins face the New York Rangers in a matchup between two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins have a 34-23-10 record and with seven wins in the last 10 games have leaped into the top wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers have a 38-19-10 record and are in third place in the Metropolitan Division. Both teams look to improve in the Eastern Conference playoff picture and secure their playoff spots, making the upcoming game a pivotal one for both teams.

The Penguins are having a great season with their offense leading the way, scoring 3.28 goals per game including 12 goals in the last three games. Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, and Evgeni Malkin have scored 82 goals and 132 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has stepped up as well. Bryan Rust, Jason Zucker, and Richard Rakell have combined for 62 goals and 65 assists while defensemen Kris Letang and Jeff Petry have added 15 goals and 45 assists from the point to open up the offense.

The offense has been great but the defense has been awful, allowing 3.21 goals per game with eight goals in the last two games. Marcus Pettersson and Jeff Petry have combined for 5.5 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. The one bright spot has been the play of goaltender Tristan Jarry who has a .910 save pe rcentage and a 2.95 goals-against average on 1105 shots with 5.2 goals saved above average.
