Learn More About Iran - Cup (Soccer)

The Hazfi Cup, officially known as the Iranian Hazfi Cup, is Iran's premier knockout football competition, organized annually by the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI). Established in 1976 as the Pahlavi Cup, it was renamed following the 1979 revolution. The tournament provides a pathway for clubs across various tiers of Iranian football to compete for national glory and a spot in continental competitions.

Format and Structure

The Hazfi Cup features a knockout format, where teams face elimination upon losing a match. The competition typically includes 96 teams from different levels:

  • Persian Gulf Pro League (Top Tier): 16 teams
  • Azadegan League (Second Tier): 18 teams
  • 2nd Division: 28 teams
  • Provincial Leagues: 34 teams

Teams from the lower divisions commence the tournament in the initial rounds, with top-tier teams entering at the Round of 32. Matches are single-elimination, and if a game ends in a draw during regular time, it proceeds to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

Significance

Winning the Hazfi Cup is prestigious, as it secures the champion a place in the AFC Champions League Elite qualifying play-off, offering an opportunity to compete at the highest level of Asian club football.

Historical Context

Esteghlal and Persepolis, both based in Tehran, are the most successful clubs in the competition's history, each securing seven titles. The current titleholder, as of the 2023–24 season, is Sepahan, who claimed their fifth title by defeating Mes Rafsanjan in the final.
