East Lake Golf Club saw its Bermudagrass greens firm up with drier weather on Friday, resulting in impressively low scorecards across the field. Scottie Scheffler ballooned his lead to 15-under-par and added another four-under-par outing on Friday to maintain a two-stroke lead over Xander Schauffele. Schauffele and Jon Rahm were on fire in Round 2. Both players went seven-under-par on the round to climb into second and third place, respectively. Max Homa possesses the lowest round at East Lake to date, going eight-under-par on Friday to rise 18 spots on the leaderboard into a T8 (-9) position entering Round 3.
My Round 2 best bets were off the mark, as Homa scored 62 on Friday, leaving Sahith Theegala in the dust at 29th on the leaderboard. Theegala has experienced a tremendous rookie season but he has gone over par in both rounds at East Lake and is currently operating in last place. Sam Burns was the favorite to finish with a lower score than Aaron Wise in Round 2 but the Louisiana native tanked on Friday, going four over par and dropping 15 spots to T24 (-2) ahead of Round 3. Patrick Cantlay improved his play from the opening round, going four-under-par on Friday to wind up finishing T4 (-12) alongside Sungjae Im. This resulted in a push, meaning the money staked in the wager on Cantlay was returned.
