New Jersey Super Bowl LVIII Handle Surges To 1.6 Million

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported a preliminary Super Bowl LVIII handle of approximately $141.6 million, an impressive bounce-back from last year that also fell just short of the all-time record.

Wagering was up 30% compared to 2023, when $109.3 million was bet as the Kansas City Chiefs edged the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35. The Chiefs posted another three-point victory on Sunday, defeating the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 25-22 in overtime. The Garden State’s 12 retail sportsbooks and 18 mobile betting apps combined to generate $8.5 million in revenue, good for a 6% hold.

That was a slightly better performance than Nevada, which reaped $6.8 million in winnings from a record $185.6 million worth of accepted bets. New Jersey’s all-time record for Super Bowl handle is $143.7 million, set in 2022 when the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Los Angeles Rans. It is the fourth straight year New Jersey sportsbooks topped bettors, who came out a combined $8.9 million ahead the first two years Super Bowl wagering was available in 2019-20, including $4.6 million to the good in 2019.

Operator winnings were down more than a third from 2023, when the house won an all-time high of approximately $12.8 million while crafting an 11.7% win rate. New Jersey sportsbooks have failed to attain the industry standard 7% hold for betting on four of six Super Bowls since wagering became available on a state-by-state basis in 2018.
