New York was edged 4-3 at home by Edmonton in their most recent game Saturday afternoon. In the last 10 meetings, the Rangers own a commanding 9-1 advantage, including a 3-1 road victory in the most recent matchup on April 5, 2022.

New Jersey has been hot of late, which has come as a surprise seeing how they were 28th in the league last season. The Devils entered Sunday with a six-point edge over the Islanders for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division race. On the year, New Jersey is 3rd in scoring as they average 3.73 goals per game on the season. The Devils are 1st in goals against as they allow 2.18 goals per contest. New Jersey is 21st in power play success as they have cashed in 20.3% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Devils are 7th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 81.9% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Washington, New Jersey played solid hockey to win their second straight and their 15th in the last 16 games. The Devils were outshot 10-7 in the opening period of play but took a 1-0 le ad to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Nico Hischier opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season, on the power play, at 9:04 with assists going to Dawson Mercer and Dougie Hamilton. The second period saw the shots even at 13 but the Devils outscored the Capitals 2-0 to take a 3-0 lead at the second intermission. Jack Hughes made it a 2-0 game with his ninth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 5:59 mark of the period. Hughes scored his second of the game and 10th of the year at 9:19 with assists going to Ryan Graves and Mercer to extend to a 3-0 advantage. In the third period, New Jersey was outshot 15-9 but outscored Washington 2-1 to put the game away. Hughes capped his hat trick with his third goal of the night and 11th of the season at 9:51 off an assist from Erik Haula for a 4-0 advantage. After Washington got on the board, Fabian Zetterlund closed the scoring with his fourth of the season at 14:47 with Michael McLeod and Jo nas Siegenthaler drawing the assists on that goal. Vitek Vanacek made 37 saves for the Devils, who were outshot 38-29, in the victory. He is expected to be between the pipes again for this contest.
