NBA top picks for Tuesday

Betting on the Clippers has been tough in 2022-23. Just when you think the team is going to come through in a great spot, it lets you down. This is a winnable game for Los Angeles against a shorthanded Warriors team playing on the second night of a back-to-back set, but covering this spread will be difficult.

Golden State is just 8-19 against the spread on the road, 2-7 against divisional opponents, and 2-5 across its last seven. The Clippers are just 12-15 at home, but they've covered in four of eight matchups as 8.5-point favorites or higher. Los Angeles has lost two straight and failed to cover in three.

While Golden State has dealt with multiple injuries over the last month, the team has suffered a nine-point loss just twice in its last 15 games, and the Clippers haven't earned a nine-point win in eight straight. Take the road team to keep it close and cover.

Boston is shorthanded, but wow this is a big spread. The Celtics will be without Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum is doubtful, and both Grant Williams and Robert Williams ar e questionable. The Celtics are 2-1 as the road dog this season, and the team has never been more than a 2.5-point underdog in 2022-23.

Why then are we backing the Bucks to earn a double-digit victory? The Celtics will likely be down four starters in a tough road matchup against a Bucks team that's won 10 straight. Milwaukee has covered in four straight and six of its last eight, and the team is 18-10 as the home favorite. Without its core group of players available, there's just no way we can back the Celtics to cover, even with this huge line.

Don't look now, but Phoenix is starting to claw its way back up the Western Conference standings. The Suns are 4-1 straight up over their last five games and 3-2 against the spread during that span. Phoenix is 13-9 as the home favorite and an impressive 8-0 against Pacific Division opponents.

Sacramento has been equally reliable against divisional opponents, going 8-2 ATS this season. The Kings are 16-11 on the road and 8-6 as the road underdog. The team is 3-2 straight up over its last five games and 2-3 ATS.

While both teams have been great during divisional play, take the home squad that's surging. With Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton available, the Suns should be able to cover this modest spread.

Let's go back to the well again with the Blazers. Portland is 14-6-1 as the home favorite and 17-10-2 at home overall. The Over has hit during each of the team's last three games and five of its last six.

Washington is 14-9-1 against Western Conference opponents, and while the team is just 10-13-1 as the road dog, the Over has hit in each of its last two games. Washington faced Golden State last night, and the teams combined for 261 points. Both the Wizards and Blazers are playing on the second night of a back-to-back set, and each team has hit the Over in at least half of its matchups with no rest. We'll bank on a high-scoring affair on Tuesday.
