  • The Mets are 3-5 straight up (SU) in their last eight games.
  • Boston is 7-3 SU in its last 10 games.

Mets vs Red Sox Pred iction & Pick

Regardless of who wins the suspended game, the Mets are counting on Max Scherzer to lead them to victory. The three-time Cy Young winner is coming off a performance where he struck out six batters over seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over the LA Dodgers. Furthermore, Scherzer is 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA in six previous starts at Fenway Park.

At the same time, James Paxton's play at home shows that he should be able to keep pace with Scherzer. The veteran lefty is 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA while averaging 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings in four starts at Fenway Park this season.

As great as Scherzer has performed, I'm backing the Red Sox to win at home. The Mets are just 10-21 SU against southpaws this season while being just 9-22 SU in the underdog role. On top of that, they're only batting .230 against lefties (fourth-worst in MLB) with a .698 on-base plus slugging percentage (ninth-worst).

If Paxton continues his rock-solid play at Fenway Park, the Red Sox have a great shot at winning.

Final Score Prediction:'Red Sox: 4 | Mets: 3

Mets vs Red Sox Best Bet

The Over might be what's favored, but let's go with the Under on the 9-run total. After all, seven of the Mets' eight previous games saw fewer than nine runs scored while the same has occurred in each of the Red Sox's last three outings. I also don't expect a ton of offense given how sound Scherzer and Paxton have been on the mound.

With the last six Mets-Red Sox matchups averaging 7.2 total runs, the Under looks more and more appealing.
