Matt Rhule Gets New Head-Coaching Gig After Panthers Firing

The Carolina Panthers were the first team to fire their head coach in 2022, parting ways with the underwhelming Matt Rhule. The former college coach simply didn't find any success in the pros, and his 1-4 start this year was the final nail in the coffin.

Despite his firing, Rhule has quickly landed his next football gig.

Rhule is taking over as the next head coach at Nebraska, it was announced officially on Saturday. He heads back to the college ranks and will succeed Scott Frost, who was ousted after a 1-2 start to this season.

Perhaps Rhule can improve his reputation now that he's back in familiar territory. He originally rose to prominence as a head coach at Temple and Baylor before making the jump to the NFL. His struggles were apparent right out of the gate, though, winning just five games in 2020 and 2021.

Overall, Rhule finished an abysmal 11-27 during his Panthers tenure. Interim head coach Steve Wilks has gone 2-4 in his ste ad ahead of Week 12.
