The MAC/Sun Belt Challenge hopes to make a name for itself as the conferences clash early this season. On Thursday the James Madison Dukes (1-0, 1-0 ATS) will travel to take on the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-0, 0-0 ATS). James Madison just rocked the college basketball world, defeating #4 Michigan State in East Lansing 79-76 in overtime, winning outright as 16.5-point underdogs. Kent State just played a Division II team in Malone University, and won 79-58 in a game that had no spread. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 EST from the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio.

The beginning of the college basketball season is a little light on high profile matchups, but James Madison was able to get the hoops world buzzing with a huge upset. This was not just a small school beating a big school, Michigan State was ranked 4th in the nation. Junior Terrence Edwards led the Dukes in scoring with 24 and Charleston-transfer Raekwon Horton hit the go ahead three with nine seconds left to win the game. Michigan State head coach gave credit where it was due after saying, “Give them a lot of credit. They played better than us. They played harder than us.”

James Madison was selected to finish first in the Sun Belt in the preseason coaches' poll. Terrence Edwards was selected as a preseason first team all-conference selection, and justified that pick with the 24 point game against MSU. Edwards played 41 minutes in the game, including overtime, and shot 12-13 from t he free throw line. TJ Bickerstaff is a 6'9 senior forward who played huge inside with 21 points and 14 rebounds against the MSU frontline. Bickerstaff transferred in from Boston College. Michael Green III knocked down three triples off the bench and finished with 13 points.

James Madison finished last season ranked 98th overall by KenPom. They finished ranked 150th in offensive efficiency, and 80th in defensive efficiency. They played at a fast tempo last season, ranking 35th in the nation based on pace of play.
