Houston Astros vs. Philadelphia Phillies Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 11-1-2022

On Tuesday night, the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies will meet in the third game of the World Series with the series knotted at one game apiece. On Monday night, game three was postponed due to rain and, as a result, the pitching matchup has been altered for this one. The pitching matchup in game three will still be right-hander Lance McCullars Jr. (402, 2.27/0-0, 2.45) for the Astros but he will be taking on Phillies lefty Ranger Saurez (10-7, 3.65/1-0, 1.86) instead of the originally scheduled starter Noah Syndergaard. First pitch is scheduled for 8:03pm EST.

The Houston Astros took their first postseason loss in game one of the series after coughing up a 5-0 lead to lose in 10-innings 6-5. In game two, things got back to normal as the Astros took another 5-0 lead but, this time, the starting pitching held up until the Astros could turn to their dominant pen. On Monday night, the third game of the series was washed out. Houston manager Dusty Baker has decided to stick with his original World Series rotation instead of moving pieces around with the extra days' rest. McCullars will get the ball Tuesday night followed by Cristian Javier in game four and Justin Verlander with an extra days' rest in game five. Houston hopes that the outbreak of some key players in game two, such as Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez, will carry over into Philadelphia.

The Astros certainly have their formula for success: quality starting pitching, timely hitting with power, and a dominant bullpen. In game one, they couldn't get to the bullpen with a lead but were able to do so in game two. On Tuesday night, they will look to the playoff experience of Lance McCullars Jr. to get them to that excellent pen. McCullars has plenty of playoff experience, having been on the Astros roster since their playoff days back in 2015. He has faced the Phillies once this season, allowing six hits and just one run while striking out five batters. He will have a fresh bullpen with two-days rest behind him.
