No. 9 seed Florida State (16-15, 10-10 ACC) needed a win in its regular-season finale against Miami to avoid finishing under .500 in conference play in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2015 and 2016.
No. 8 seed Virginia Tech (18-13, 10-10 ACC) won three consecutive games to end the regular season, beating Wake Forest, Louisville, and Notre Dame by an average of 11 points per game. This is the third time in the previous four ACC Tournaments that the Hokies have had at least a first-round bye.
These teams split the regular season meetings by winning on their home floors, as the Seminoles won 77-74 on Jan. 6, and the Hokies won the rematch 83-75 on Feb. 13. Both are considered mid-range contenders by the top-heavy ACC Tournament odds.

Virginia Tech had drastic home/road splits this season, going 14-2 at home and winning just two of 11 road games. However, Washington D.C. has a large contingent of Hokies alumni, and this will feel much more like a Virginia Tech home game than at any point in the next five seasons when the ACC Tournament returns to North Carolina.
Florida State forced Virginia Tech into 16 turnovers in the first meeting, bu t the Hokies played much cleaner basketball in the rematch, committing just 11 turnovers with 12 assists.
This is the only one of the four second-round games where the matchup was predetermined entering the tournament, as the other teams that earned a bye (Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Clemson) had to await winners of Tuesday's games. We expect that to help the Hokies more than the Seminoles, as head coach Mike Young is excellent on short prep. His complex offense with constant off-ball cutting should make Florida State's defense spin, and it should be a parade to the free throw line, as the Seminoles allow the highest free throw rate per field goal attempt (40.4%) in league play. Virginia Tech improved from scoring 1.03 to 1.26 points per possession between the two regular-season meetings, and it is likely to turn in another efficient offensive performance in the rubber match.
This three-star play would be a more confident fo ur-star pick if it is confirmed that Hokies senior center Lynn Kidd is playing. Kidd missed the regular season finale with a hamstring injury, and he finished third in the league's Most Improved Player voting, thanks largely to 12-point and 15-rebound efforts against the Seminoles.
