College basketball top picks

Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams will not win any Coach of the Year awards, but he has kept his team connected after an 0-8 start in league play. The Red Raiders have split their last four games despite being down a starter (Pop Isaacs), and the two wins in that stretch were each against top-13 op ponents at home (Iowa State and Kansas State). Not to take anything away from the Cyclones' and Wildcats' success so far this year, but they were each picked to finish in the bottom three of the Big 12 standings.

The Red Raiders will draw a lot of spread bets as underdogs, given their recent home success, but the Longhorns are a different animal than the teams TTU has beaten recently. This is the first time the Longhorns have started 20-5 or better since 2014, and their top two league ranking in several offensive categories (adjusted offensive efficiency, effective field goal percentage, 2-point shooting, and free throw shooting) will be the difference.

Texas Tech covered the spread in four of its last five games, but Texas is 2-1 ATS as a road favorite and covered in 10 of 18 games against unranked opponents. BetMGM is the only place one can find Texas at -3.5 while paying the standard juice.

Many bracketologists had North Carolina as either in the First Four Out or First Four In entering the weekend, and the Tar Heels passed the first test in what felt like a “must-win game,” beating Clemson by 20 points. It was UNC's fourth conference win by 16-plus points this season, and it now takes on a Miami team that it has beaten in five of the previous six head-to-head meetings. However, with the way Miami can utilize small-ball matchups to create mismatches against North Carolina's bigs, it should have plenty of success offensively.

Entering the Clemson game, North Carolina was plus-134 with forward Armando Bacot on the floor and plus-3 with him off the floor. Bacot committed at least four fouls in five of his previous eight games, and Miami will look to consistently put him in pick-and-roll situations and drive him to get him in foul trouble.

Miami has covered in all three of its games as a road underdog and is 7-2 ATS on the road overall.

Charleston is usually a profitable Under team at home, with an O/U record of 4-9-1 in its 14 home games. However, the quick turnaround off of a Saturday game bodes well for the chances of a high-scoring game in this matchup, as the Over is 3-1-1 when the Cougars have just one day off.

Charleston ranks second in the league in adjusted offensive efficiency and effective field goal percentage and should have plenty of clean trips against a Northeastern defense that ranks dead-last in the CAA in turnovers forced (13.4% turnover rate). Charleston's 87 points in an earlier road win against the Huskies was its fourth-highest scoring output in conference play this season. We expect the Cougars to get lazy on the defensive end if they build a similar early lead in thi s rematch.

Monmouth has just five wins on the season, but one was a 15-point road win against North Carolina A&T as an 11-point underdog. That victory started a four-game winning streak, and the Hawks' only loss since late January is to conference-leading Hofstra.

Monmouth's success against the Aggies is sustainable on its home court, considering it does not rely on the variability of 3-point shooting. The Hawks rank fifth nationally in the percentage of their points coming from inside the arc (60.4%). They will again exploit North Carolina A&T's vulnerable interior defense (ninth in league play in 2-point percentage allowed).
