Arizona State vs. Southern California (USC) Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-9-2023

It’s the second day of the Pac-12 Tournament with a quarterfinal matchup on the hardwood in the city that never sleeps. The sixth-seeded Arizona State Sun Devils are the “road” team as they take on the third-seeded USC Trojans, with a spot in the semifinals on the line, Thursday night. Arizona State slogged their way through an uninspiring 63-57 win over 11th-seeded Oregon State in their first-round matchup late Wednesday night, though they failed to cover as a 9.5-point favorite. USC ended their regular season on a positive note as they took down Arizona State 68-65 at home Saturday night, though they failed to cover the line as a 4.5-point favorite. In the all-time series between the programs, the Trojans own a 62-42 advantage and, after Saturday’s win, have taken the last seven meetings.

Arizona State was less than impressive for long stretches of their first-round clash with Oregon State but managed to prevail, mainly due to defense and the Beavers’ offensive ineptitude. Against Oregon State, Arizona State led by as many as eight with just under five minutes to play in the opening half, only to see their edge trimmed to three at intermission. The Sun Devils used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to break a 36-36 tie and led the rest of the way, though it was hardly easy. Arizona State didn’t hit a field goal over the final 4:01 of regulation and survived as Oregon State had just one field goal in the final 6:14 of the game. The Sun Devils shot 39.7% from the floor, including five of 21 from beyond the arc, and missed seven of 19 free throws yet still managed to win the game.
