Based on the betting odds, there are only six legitimate candidates and five of them have odds of +550 or shorter. We are taking a stab on the one person with +650 odds, especially since it makes a lot of sense.
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Budenholzer is not seen as a candidate for the Suns' position. He, of course, was fired by the Bucks after they lost in the opening round against the Miami Heat. The 76ers gig might just be Budenholzer's preferred destination, and that is important given this competitive market.
The case for why the 76ers should be interested in Budenholzer is pretty simple, as well. He spent 17 years as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, learning under Gregg Popovich. He then took over for the Atlanta Hawks for five years before landing with the Bucks ahead of the 2018-19 season.
The Bucks won 50-plus games in four of the five seasons under Budenholzer, with the lone exception being a 46-win shortened season. He guided Milwaukee to a championship that year, and has posted a 484-317 regular-season record in his career as a head coach.
Budenholzer was ultimately let go after the Bucks lost to the Heat in the opening round of the 2023 NBA playoffs as the No. 1 overall seed in the Eastern Conference. Putting aside the fact he was without his best player for multiple games in the series, that loss doesn't look as bad with the Heat now one win away from an NBA Finals appearance.
Nurse is righ tfully the favorite in this market, but don't be surprised if Kevin Durant makes a push for him to join the Suns. If that's the case, the 76ers could do a lot worse than having to settle for a coach that is 56-48 in the postseason.
