We're talking about Florida State, which had been lost in the college football wilderness the past few years like the Noles hadn't been since the pre-Bobby Bowden days of the mid-'70s under Darrell Mudra. It wasn't easy for Mike Norvell, who arrived from Memphis just in time for the pandemic season to take over a program that had begun its precipitous decline in the later stages of the Jimbo Fisher era and continued to erode in the brief Willie Taggar t regime. But before Deion Sanders could put his name in nomination for the job at his alma mater, Norvell: recorded 10 wins last fall, the first time in double digits at FSU since 2016; “won the state” by beating Florida and Miami; topped long-ago bowl nemesis Oklahoma in the Orlando Cheez-It Bowl; wound up ranked in the top 10 in the coaches poll.
