Toledo vs. Akron Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 2-7-2023

Two of the top mid-major teams in college basketball will square off on Tuesday night when Akron hosts Toledo. The Rockets have won seven consecutive games, while the Zips are riding an eight-game winning streak. Akron is sitting atop the MAC standings with a 9-1 record, but Toledo is just one game behind.

Toledo only went 10-6 through its first 16 games this season, losing two of its first three conference games. The Rockets have gotten hot since then, winning seven consecutive games. They have been double-digit favorites in each of their last four games, covering the spread in blowout wins over Bowling Green and Central Michigan. This will be their first of two meetings with Akron, as they will play host to the Zips on Feb. 21. Toledo is tied with Kent State for second place in the MAC standings, so the Rockets could jump into a three-way tie for first place with a win on Tuesday.

They have relied on their offense to win games this season, ranked No. 14 in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency ratings. Toledo has been one of the top outside shooting teams in the country, knocking down nearly 40% of its 3-point attempts, which ranks No. 13. The Rockets have done an excellent job of avoiding turnovers as well, as they have the seventh-best turnover rate in the country. They are facing an Akron defense that is No. 89 in adjusted efficiency. Junior guard RayJ Dennis leads Toledo with 19.0 points, 5.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game. Senior forward JT Shumate has been excellent as well, averaging 17.7 points and 5.1 boards.
