Several Betting Operators Agree To Minor Maryland Penalties

Several Maryland sports betting operators — including Crab Sports, DraftKings, and FanDuel — agreed to consent agreement penalties at Thursday's state lottery meeting.

Crab Sports, a betting app only available in Maryland, paid the Maryland Lottery $5,500 for “not maintaining players' deposited funds in the correct account,” according to a lottery spokesperson. The operator also paid $2,000 for understating its wagering tax due to a reporting error. The violations occurred in the fall of 2023.

DraftKings entered into a $5,000 consent agreement for selling gift cards at retail outlets that “did not include required responsible gambling messages regarding the age limits for participants in sports wagering and daily fantasy sports.” This violation occurred in April of 2023.

Additionally, FanDuel paid the lottery $2,500 for a pair of violations. The first, which resulted in a $2,000 consent agreement penalty, came because the operator didn't ensure that its terms and conditions mentioned a possible additional fee for credit card transactions. A $250 consent agreement occurred because FanDuel ran a promotional ad on Reddit without responsible gambling messaging. Those violations were from October 2023.
