Maryland Bill Would Ban Betting On College Campuses

A Maryland bill (House Bill 1087) introduced earlier this month seeks to ban betting on college campuses in the state. The legislation, which was proposed by Delegate Pamela Queen, is set to be discussed in the House Ways and Means Committee on Feb. 22.

The legislation would require colleges in the state to establish a geofence around their campus, prohibiting anyone from accessing legal sports betting apps. The bill proposes that the geofences be set up by August of this year.

Queen's legislation aims to protect college students, a population vulnerable to problem gambling. Last year, Maryland legislators passed a bill that banned universities from partnershiping with sports betting operators if the arrangement included compensation for schools when students or alumni signed up through a promotional code.

The University of Maryland and PointsBet ended their marketing partnership last year, although a PointsBet representative told the university never received promotional signup revenue.
