A former University of the South (also known as Sewanee) women's basketball head coach was found to have violated NCAA sports betting rules, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
The coach — a male who was not identified by name in the report — received a two-year show-cause order for his violations, and the Tennessee school was put on probation for a year. The probationary period includes mandatory sports betting education for members of the university.'
The NCAA found that the coach wagered $93,000 on college and professional sporting events from January 2021 through March of 2023. Approximately $28,000 worth of wagers were placed on college sporting events. Some of those wagers were on women's college basketball, although no bets were placed on games involving Sewanee, a Division III program.'
“Given the prevalence of sports wagering activities on college campuses, it is arguably even more important that those closest to student-athletes refrain from such behaviors to protect student-athletes,” a Division III Committee on Infractions said via a press release.
