Last season was the best for Ohio State since losing to Alabama in the 2021 CFP Championship game. The Buckeyes actually finished second in the Big 10 East behind Michigan after losing to them in one of their final games of the season. However, they were still able to manage an 11-2 record on the year and 8-1 record in the Big 10. It looked like they would miss the CFP after that loss to the Wolverines, but after No. 4 USC got blown out of the water by Utah in the Pac-12 Championship, they snuck in by taking that No. 4 spot.

They got matched up with the defending national champions and No. 1 seed Georgia Bulldogs in the Peach Bowl. Ohio State gave them all they could handle, and for a majority of the game, actually looked like they were going to win. However, a late surge by the defending champs put them in front 42-41, and a missed 50-yard field goal at the stroke of midnight on New Years mad e sure the Buckeyes started 2023 out in pain.
