John Deere Classic Field and Course
Just nine players in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings tee it up Thursday at TPC Deere Run with its bentgrass fairways and greens. But that's the most at the event since 2012 and includes the only top-20 player Cameron Young (19). World No. 34 Denny McCarthy started the year ranked No. 80 and has three top-10 finishes in his last six starts since May. That includes a T7 on a similar short comp course at TPC River Highlands and the Travelers Championship along with a runner-up finish and playoff defeat against a stronger field at Muirfield Villaga and the Memorial Tournament.
Also, No. 29 Russell Henley has a runner-up finish in this event the last three years, and No. 42 Emiliano Grillo finished T2 last year.

Few in this field are playing better than Denny McCarthy, who goes as one of the top favorites this week. With strokes gained'Ball Striking, Around-the-Green, Short Game and Putting along with Birdies or Better Gained stats of interest, the 30-year-old McCarthy fits a strong profile for success this week and a potential breakthrough win on the PGA Tour.
McCarthy finished T6 in this event last year but was sitting just behind winner J.T. Poston into the final round before firing an even par 71 on Sunday. Over his last 50 rounds, Denny is top-3 in Birdies or Better Gained and No. 1 in Short Game and Putting in this field with proven performance on bentgrass as well. McCarthy also tops this field in Par 4 scoring from 400-500 yards. If his Ball Striking and irons on on point with his Approach play, McCarthy should be a major win contender.
