The West Virginia Mountaineers and Pitt Panthers face off on Thursday night in a Week 1 college football showdown at Heinz Field. These two teams are only 77 miles apart from each other.
The Pitt Panthers were the ACC champions last season, but this team looks a lot different this season, and that starts under center. Kenny Pickett has gone off to the NFL, and star wide receiver Jordan Addison is off to the NFL. USC transfer Kedon Slovis is under center this season, and they hope that he can fill the shoes that Pickett has left. Even though Addison is gone, Pitt does have talent outside. Last season Jared Wayne caught 47 passes for 658 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, they have a strong defensive line, and stopping the run is going to be important here.
On the other side of this matchup is the West Virginia Mountaineers and they finished last season with a 6-7 record, including a loss against Minnesota in their bowl game. Under center for Pitt, this season is JT Daniels. He started his career at USC and spent the last two seasons with Georgia. Last season with the Bulldogs he completed 68 passes for 722 yards and seven touchdowns. All five starts on the offensive line are back, and they need to do a better job of opening holes for the running game. Tony Mathis Jr. and Justin Johnson are the two best running backs on the team and will be leaned on heavily in this game.
