Matthew Phillips, Sonny Milano, and Connor McMichael have scored two goals and two assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. The hope is that Alexander Ovechkin can step up as he scored 42 goals and 33 assists last season and is one of the greatest scorers of all time but has yet to score this season.
The offense has let the Capitals down but the defense has also struggled, allowing six goals in their first two games. John Carlson and Rasmus Sandin have led the top pairing but the rest of the defense has struggled, allowing opponents to easily generate shots on the net. The bright spot has been the play of goaltender Darcy Kuemper who saved 38 of the 40 shots he faced in his season debut.
