It's time once again for everyone's favorite generational marvel to dazzle us with athletic feats that shouldn't be possible. Shohei Ohtani remains a gift from the baseball heavens, and he's a front-runner for AL MVP and among the Cy Young contenders. It's all so very absurd.

This time he's set to make the lowly Chicago White Sox look foolish. But will he do that while pitching deep into the night? And can he be nearly flawless?

Here are our best Shohei Ohtani player prop picks for the matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox (odds via our best MLB betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Shohei Ohtani player props

Being one of MLB's foremost punchout artists is great fun. You get to baffle hitters, fans love some sizzling heat, and your infielders enjoy some stress-free innings. Everybody wins! Except probably the Angels.

But even inferno-heaving hurlers need to work for strikeouts, often resulting in a pitch count that gets elevated quicker than the pitcher and his team might like. That's partly why Ohtani has pitched into the seventh in ning just five times over his 15 starts in 2023. He would need to tally at least one out in the seventh inning to cash the Over here, a mark Ohtani reached only nine times across 28 starts in 2022, and seven times over 23 outings in 2021.

He's averaging 5.9 innings per start in 2023 despite the Angels giving him a longer workload leash. Ohtani threw 100-plus pitches 10 times in 2022, and on June 27 he's already recorded six such starts during the 2023 campaign.

Strikeouts require some time, effort, and work, unless the opposition is among the most whiff-friendly teams and cooperates. And as putrid as the White Sox have been, they don't fit into that category. They rank perfectly in the middle of the pack in strikeouts (16th with 687). Chicago often flails and fails, but the lineup puts up enough of a fight.

Take all that into account, and add in the 5.79 innings projection fro m NumberFire for Ohtani on Monday. That makes the price here from DraftKings appealing enough in a tough market.

Even the great cultural icon Bob Ross made a brush stroke in error now and then. Ohtani also isn't immune to such speed bumps along the way to throwing another shining gem.

He's recorded only four outings in 2023 with fewer than two walks allowed. Even some of his most dominant affairs come with a handful of free passes. The two-way megastar has registered five starts with double-digit strikeouts, and in two he's finished with three-plus walks. He's also not above losing his command for a stretch, which has resulted in three appearances with four-plus walks, including five during a recent matchup against the Seattle Mariners on June 9.

Zoom out, and Ohtani is allowing 3.7 walks per nine i nnings, despite his overall brilliance. That's significantly higher than his 2.4 in 2022 and 3.0 in 2021.

It's true that taking the first-base gift isn't exactly a core skill for the White Sox, who rank last in the category. But that didn't seem to matter much for the Nationals, a team that's just two walks ahead of the White Sox on the season, and a Washington batter trotted to first five times against Ohtani earlier in 2023.

Toss in the 1.77 walk projection from NumberFire, and we again land on one of the better plays in a market with few options offering remotely alluring value.
