They proceeded to win two out of three games at Baltimore over the weekend, winning the final two games of the series. New York opened its series in Cleveland with a 3-2 loss on Monday, so it needed a win on Tuesday to keep its hopes of winning another series alive (this story was published prior to that game). Star outfielder Aaron Judge had hit four home runs and was batting .333 heading into that contest. The Yankees are No. 18 in the MLB in team batting average (.241) and are facing a Cleveland pitching staff that is No. 8 in ERA (3.73).

Right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt is going to start for New York on Wednesday afternoon. He has not been able to go deep in either of his starts this season, allowing three earned runs across five hits in 3.1 innings against San Francisco on April 1. Schmidt followed that up by lasting just 3.1 innings at Baltimore last Friday as well, giving up four earned runs on five hits. He needed 84 pitches to record just 10 outs, putting more strain on the bullpen. The Yankees do not have healthy alternatives right now, so Schmidt is getting another start on Wednesday afternoon.
