It’s a semifinal matchup in the Beach Division of the Fort Myers Tip-Off when a member of the SEC takes on a program from the Big East on the hardwood. The Mississippi State Bulldogs are the “road” team as they take on the Marquette Golden Eagles Monday night. Mississippi State rolled to an easy 79-42 win at home over South Dakota Thursday night in their previous contest, easily covering the 15-point line. Marquette bombed LIU 95-58 at home in their previous contest Thursday night, covering the 29.5-point spread in that contest. In the all-time series between the teams, the Golden Eagles won the lone previous meeting, taking an 89-62 win back on November 20, 2012 in the Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center in Honolulu.

Mississippi State bombed South Dakota at home in their previous contest Thursday night to stay unbeaten. The Bulldogs ran their record to 4-0 on the season with each of those victories coming by double digits. Against South Dakota, Mississippi State gave up the opening bucket before reeling off 15 straight points to take control of the game. The Bulldogs were up 23 at the half and didn’t let the Coyotes closer than that the rest of the way en route to the blowout win. Mississippi State shot 47.2% from the field, including seven of 25 from three-point range, and won the battle of the boards 47-32 while limiting South Dakota to 29.6% in the contest. Tolu Smith led the Bulldogs with 16 points in the win.

The Bulldogs are 182nd in the nation in scoring average with 73.8 points per game on the season. Mississippi State is 13th in rebounding by collecting 44.5 boards per conte st and hand out 17.3 dimes per game, which is 49th in the nation. The Bulldogs have been decent on the defensive end, ranking 3rd in scoring defense by allowing an average of 46.8 points per game. Tolu Smith leads the team in scoring as he puts up 17.8 points plus 8.5 rebounds a night. D.J. Jefferies is the only other player scoring in double figures as he puts up 11 points plus 5.5 boards a night. Cameron Matthews, Shakeel Moore, Dashawn Davis, Tyler Stevenson, Shawn Jones Jr., Will McNair Jr., Eric Reed Jr., Kimani Hamilton and Jamel Horton Jr. are all looked at for solid minutes in coach Chris Jans’ rotation. Mississippi State is shooting 47.2% from the floor as a team on the year. The Bulldogs are knocking down 6.8 triples per game while shooting 30% from beyond the arc. Mississippi State has been below average at the free throw line this season, hitting 63% of their chances.
