The Los Angeles Clippers came into the season as a common choice to come out of the Western Conference playoffs and into the NBA Finals for the first time in team history this season. Kawhi Leonard returned to the lineup this season and optimism has been running high in LA this year. On Sunday night, the Clippers got a stark reminder of just how difficult it will be in a stacked Western Conference when they were trounced by the Suns, 112-95 at home. Leonard returned after missing the second game of the season for maintenance purposes on his surgically repaired knee but even his presence could not stop a Suns team that had a 15-9 advantage from the 3pt line and had 29 assists compared with just 16 for the Clippers. Marcus Morris Sr. led the Clippers with 22 points in the loss. Leonard chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds while playing just 21 minutes off the bench.

“We got some room to grow,” Leonar d said after the game. “I didn't like how some of the times we wasn't in the flow, the offense was very stagnant to me, and we got to get better on the defensive end by rebounding the basketball.”

The Clippers should be an interesting regular season team this year as two key pieces, Leonard and point guard John Wall, may both miss a decent amount of time while continuing to recover from major injuries. LA has chosen to have both players come off the bench for now, understandable in order to keep some continuity with the starting lineup. It will be interesting to see how head coach Tyronn Lue manages his two veterans with the goal being to have them both ready to go full strength come playoff time. The lack of continuity has shown through the first three games, particularly on the offensive end. Despite having a plethora of weapons, the Clippers have only scored 103 points per game in their first three games and the 3pt shot, a huge strength for the team in 2021-22, has not found its mark yet as the team is shooting just 32.5% from long range to start the season.
