The Edmonton Oilers came into the 2023-24 season as the odds-on favorites to win the Western Conference and make a run at the Stanley Cup. If the Oilers are to do so, they may want to avoid playing the Vancouver Canucks. Edmonton opened the season with two straight games against the Canucks and are now 0-2. In the opener, the Oilers were blasted 8-1 at Vancouver in an opening night shocker. The Oilers followed that up with a 4-3 loss to Vancouver in the team's home opener. The Oilers were stoned by Vancouver goalie Casey DeSmith despite outshooting Vancouver 41-16 in the game. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and a goal and two assists while Connor McDavid added a goal and an assist in the loss.

“If you lose two games in the middle of the season it is not the end of the world,” said Oilers forward Zach Hyman. “You lose two games here and you get all these questions about your defensive game. It is not idea l, obviously, to lose the first two games. But there is no panic. We are a pretty confident group.”

Edmonton has only averaged two goals per game over the first two games, stymied by the Vancouver defense. They are, however, one of the NHL's premier scoring teams and should again be amongst the league leaders in scoring. Last season, the Oilers finished as the highest scoring team in the NHL. They were also first in shooting percentage and first on the power play. Defensively, the Oilers have already allowed 12 goals through two games. In 2022-23, the Oilers finished 17th in goals allowed per game, 16th in save percentage and just 20th on the penalty kill.

Key Injuries: RW Brady Stonehouse is out.
