Cincinnati Reds vs. Philadelphia Phillies Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-7-2023

After a season-opening six-game home stand, the Cincinnati Reds hit the road to take on the defending National League Champion Phillies in Philadelphia. The Phillies will be making their home debut in 2023 after opening the season on the road in Texas and New York. Thursday's season opener was pushed back because of poor weather so Friday will mark the new home opener for the Phils. The pitching matchup on Friday will feature hard-throwing righty Hunter Greene (0-0, 8.10) of the Reds taking on right-hander Zach Wheeler (0-1, 8.31) of the Phillies. The opening pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM EST.

The Cincinnati Reds may be a few years away from contending but it would be hard to argue that the Reds don't have three of the top young arms in the game in Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcraft, and lefty Nick Lodolo. The Reds come into this matchup at 3-2 but have been off since Tuesday due to back-to-back rainouts. On Tuesday night, the Reds got home runs from Jason Vosler, TJ Friedl, and Stuart Fairchild but couldn't hold a 3-1 lead and fell 12-5 to the Cubs. Luis Cessa went 5.1 innings and allowed 3 hits and two runs but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead.

Hunter Greene will take the mound for the Reds after his Wednesday start was pushed back because of a rainout. Greene struck out eight batters in the season-opener but walked three and gave up five hits and three runs before departing after 3.1 innings. Greene, in his second full-season, made 24 starts in 2022 and went 5-14 with an ERA of 4.44. He threw 125.2 innings while striking out an impressive 164 batters. On the road last season, Greene was 2-7 with an ERA of 4.21 in 13 starts. Greene has yet to face the Phillies in his career.

Key Injuries: 1B Joey Votto is unlikely to be activated this weekend from the IL.
