Charlotte Hornets (7-22) vs. Denver Nuggets (17-11)

The slumping Charlotte Hornets start a six-game road trip Sunday, December 18, 2022, when they square off against the Denver Nuggets in the cross-conference battle at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, with the tip-off at 8:00 PM ET.  

This is the first meeting of the season between Charlotte and Denver. The Nuggets open as 7.5-point favorites with a total of 238.5 points. Denver misses Michael Porter Jr. (heel), while Charlotte cannot count on Cody Martin (knee) and Dennis Smith Jr. (ankle).

The Charlotte Hornets (7-22; 12-16-1 ATS) are on a seven-game losing streak following Friday’s 125-106 defeat to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hornets allowed their opponents to surpass a 120-point mark for the fifth straight contest, and the Hawks shot 54.7% from the field and 15-for-29 from beyond the 3-point line. 

Charlotte made just 39.8% of its field goals last Friday. The Hornets posted 15 offensive rebounds and a nice 26/13 assist-to-turnover ratio, but it wasn’t enough. Lonzo Ball notched 27 points (7-for-13 from deep), Kelly Oubre Jr. had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Terry Rozier added ten points and nine assists. 

“I told our guys after the first timeout we looked like a different team than the other night,” Charlotte head coach Steve Clifford said. “… But the way the Hawks played tonight, they are going to beat most teams.” 

The Hornets own the lowest offensive rating in the NBA, tallying 108.3 points per 100 possessions. They are dead last in the league in field goal percentage, too, and tied with Toronto for the second-worst 3-point percentage (32.4%). The Hornets allow 115.4 points per 100 possessions (tied-26th in the league) on 48.0% shooting from the field (24th) and 35.7% from downtown (17th).
